How To: Getting Started with Discord

1. Use your personal invitation only

• Your Discord invitation is unique and is intended only for you.

• Please do not share your invitation link with anyone else.

2. Join before your invitation expires

• Discord invitations are valid for 7 days.

• Once you click the invitation link, it cannot be used again. To avoid any issues, we recommend creating your Discord account before opening your invitation link.

3. Complete your Discord setup

Before joining the server, make sure you have:

• Created a Discord account.

• Verified your email address.

• Logged in to your Discord account using the desktop app, mobile app, or web version.

4. What Discord is used for

Discord is our primary space for project communication. We use it to share announcements, discuss project-related topics, and collaborate with contributors.

Please follow our Server Rules and communicate respectfully with other members.

5. Technical support

Discord is not a support channel.

If you experience issues related to your account, platform access, payments, assessments, or technical problems, please contact Support through the chat.

6. Roles and project access

Every contributor is assigned one or more Discord roles. Your roles determine which project spaces you can access.

• You can view your assigned roles in your Discord profile.

• If you cannot access any project spaces after joining the server, please contact your Project Lead.

7. Understanding the server structure

Discord is organized as follows:

Server → Project Spaces → Channels → Threads

• Project Spaces group discussions related to a specific project.

• Channels organize conversations by topic.

• Threads keep discussions focused and make conversations easier to follow.

Whenever possible, continue discussions in existing threads instead of creating new ones.

8. Public vs. private threads

There are two types of threads:

• Public threads are visible to everyone who has access to the channel.

• Private threads are only visible to members who have been added to the thread.

If you cannot see a private thread, it means you do not have access to it.

9. Stay on topic

Please use the appropriate project space, channel, and thread for your messages. This helps keep discussions organized and makes it easier for everyone to find information.

10. Enable notifications

To stay informed about important project updates, keep notifications enabled for the server or for the project spaces relevant to you. Also enable “Show All Channels” in server settings.

11. Mention people when you need their attention

If your question is intended for a specific person, mention them using @username. Avoid mentioning large groups unless it is necessary.

12. Search before asking

Many common questions have already been answered. Before creating a new thread, use Discord's search function to check whether the information already exists.
